Montréal is a city full of wonders, and I'm intrigued by Habitat 67, an architectural wonder in Canada.
Design
Made up of 354 prefabricated concrete modules, it forms 146 unique apartments, each with a terrace offering stunning views. The rooftop of one apartment serves as the garden terrace for another.
Vision
Originally designed by Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie for 1967 World Expo in Montreal, it aimed to provide affordable housing connecting to nature through open spaces and gardens in a crowded city.
Reality
The complex design and heavy use of cement made it costly to build and maintain. Over time, it’s become a pricey landmark, far from its original concept.
Irony
The complex has evolved and commodified as an architectural icon, with a 90-minute tour costing more than a visit to the Montreal Fine Arts Museum or Botanical Garden.
I agree! That achetecture is so unique and intriguing. I've learned in recent posts you are in Canada!
Do people still live in?
